06/06/2002 "To Get Your Goat"
The trainer explained that this horse really, really liked to have his tongue pulled so he approaches anyone he can and sticks out his tongue, hoping for a quick tug. Katie obliged. And then said Ewwww! Speaking of horse stall-mates, I have a bit of trivia on that. Horse racers keep another animal in the horse's stall before a race to help keep racing horse's nerves calm. Usually it's another horse, like in the case of War Emblem and the horse who likes to have his tongue pulled. However, it used to be quite common to have a goat as the stall mate. One tactic of rival horse racing teams was to steal the stall mate the night before the race so that the horse wouldn't be able to rest properly and would be exhausted for the race the next day. It's where we get the phrase "to get your goat". |
