About the Alligators:
I shot these scenes at Shark Valley in Everglades National Park. It was a hot day and the gators were generally lethargic. From a distance they look like old tire treads laying out in the sun.

A brief article from a girl who applied at the same time that I did whose observations are pretty good.

Yes, the Alligators are real.

Did I get called in for an interview:?
No. Big suprise - but I had to try anyway. It turns out I learned a lot about video editing during the making of this that has been really useful in some freelance work I'm doing, too. So I'm glad I did it.

I bet 80-90 percent of the applications are from men. It's just a hunch, but after combing the Survivor message boards looking for application tips and clues I saw that women weren't as interested in applying as men by a large margin - and these were the rabid fans.

Most of the applicants are probably in their late 20s/early 30s, just like me. So the odds of me getting into the 2-3 slots they seem to have for my particular demographic are pretty slim. The breakdown from Survivor 2, although the same held true for Survivor 1:

8 Men:
n  (1) geezer (Rodger)
n  (1) african-american (Nick)
n  (3) 20-something hot white guys (Kel, Mitchell, Colby)
n  (3) 30-something mature white guys (Keith, Jeff, Michael)

So out of the 50,000 applicants, I'm competing against 45,000 of them for 2-3 slots. And there are much "hotter" guys than me - so I've heard :-)

In addition, I bet they'd also wanted more of a minority presence for this one - asian, hispanic, etc... My odds weren't good.

A few words about my script:
I spent some time reading interviews with Executive Producer Mark Burnett and many of the previous contestants. Alicia, from Survivor 2, seemed to be particularly helpful.

I made notes about whatever criteria they seemed to be looking for and made sure to emphasize those points in my script. So, when I go on in my video about how I'm a natural leader, I'm adaptable, I love competition, I can improvise, blah, blah, blah... it's because I read that that's one of the qualities they were especially interested in.

My hope was that the reviewers would be sitting there watching tape after tape and just checking off important items from a predetermined checklist.
